Applications for 2025/26 Term 2 are now OPEN!
We are pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships for incoming exchange and direct enrol students who want to make a meaningful impact during their time at the University of Exeter.
You can apply for the following three scholarship themes:
- Environmental Responsibility
- Community Engagement
- Diversity and Inclusion
Eligibility criteria
- You must be an undergraduate or postgraduate student undertaking a one semester or full year inbound exchange/direct enrol study placement (administered by the Global Opportunities team) in the 2025-26 academic year at the University of Exeter.
- Students must not be in receipt of another scholarship awarded by the University of Exeter.
Key dates and requirements
17 November – 30 November 2025
Submit a project proposal (up to 600 words) relating to one of the scholarship themes. The evaluation will be based on the feasibility and impact of the project proposal.
30 November 2025 (11.59pm UK time)
Application deadline.
December 2025
Successful applicants will be notified.
21 January 2026
Scholarship induction meeting with the Inbound Team
April 2026
Give a 5-minute presentation to the Inbound Team demonstrating how you undertook the proposed activities. If this presentation is not completed, you will be required to return your scholarship in full.
Including the use of Generative AI
In order to maintain the fairness and integrity of the scholarship process, applicants must declare any use of Generative AI tools (for example, ChatGPT, Copilot, etc.) in your project proposal.
You are welcome to use GenAI tools to support your work—for example, to help with grammar, planning, or clarifying your ideas—but your proposal must be your own original work, based on your personal experiences, motivations, and project plan.
When completing the application form, you will be asked to tick any relevant boxes to show how you used GenAI tools. Failure to declare use of GenAI may result in your application being excluded from consideration.
Scholarship Description:
The University of Exeter, a global leader in climate change and sustainability research, is pleased to offer a scholarship to students who demonstrate a commitment to environmental responsibility initiatives during their study abroad.
How to apply:
Students should propose an environmental responsibility project they plan to undertake during their time at the University of Exeter (up to 600 words).
The proposal should describe your project, set out the key steps you plan to take, and explain what motivates you to pursue it. Use your own ideas throughout, drawing on any relevant experience or specific examples that help us understand your interest.
Projects could include:
- Campus sustainability, promoting sustainable practices
- Green initiatives such as rewilding and conservation projects
- Recycling and sustainable living
- Sustainable travel to and whilst in the UK
- Environmental responsibility awareness, informing and empowering others
Each recipient will be required to implement their project during their time at the University of Exeter.
Scholarship amount: £500 and a UK railcard (worth £30+) each. Payment to be made at the beginning of the mobility and upon the signing of the Scholarship Agreement.

Scholarship Description:
The University of Exeter values community involvement. This scholarship aims to recognise and support students who demonstrate a strong commitment to engaging with and contributing to their communities.
How to apply:
Students should propose a community engagement project they plan to undertake during their time at the University of Exeter (up to 600 words).
The proposal should describe your project, set out the key steps you plan to take, and explain what motivates you to pursue it. Use your own ideas throughout, drawing on any relevant experience or specific examples that help us understand your interest.
Projects could include:
- Organising cultural exchange events to connect local and international students
- Running workshops or discussion groups on social topics that matter to the local community
- Highlighting and celebrating local community stories through media, art, or writing
- Encouraging volunteering activities among peers
Each recipient will be required to implement their project during their time at the University of Exeter.
Scholarship amount: £500 each. Payment to be made at the beginning of the mobility and upon the signing of the Scholarship Agreement.
Scholarship Description:

Students should propose a diversity and inclusion project they plan to undertake during their time at the University of Exeter (up to 600 words).
The proposal should describe your project, set out the key steps you plan to take, and explain what motivates you to pursue it. Use your own ideas throughout, drawing on any relevant experience or specific examples that help us understand your interest.
Projects could include:
- Creating events that celebrate different cultures, identities or backgrounds
- Promoting inclusive practices within student groups or societies
- Organising talks, panels or campaigns that raise awareness about discrimination or inequality
- Running activities that foster dialogue and understanding across differences
- Supporting underrepresented or marginalised student communities
- Challenging stereotypes through creative projects (e.g. film, art, writing)
Each recipient will be required to implement their project during their time at the University of Exeter.

Talented athletes could be eligible to apply for the UoE Sports Scholarship Scheme - one of the most prestigious in the UK - helping the best student athletes reach their full potential. The scheme provides a comprehensive support package and is tailored to suit the needs of each individual athlete.
The Sports Scholarships are available to the most outstanding student athletes who show evidence of achievement at national or international level, primarily awarded to those competing in our Focus Sports. Students may also be eligible for a High Performance Bursary. For eligibility and how to apply see the Sports Scholarships Scheme pages.
Sports bursaries are available for students of outstanding sporting ability who show evidence of achievement at national level and above, or those that show potential to compete at national level.
Each application will be considered on an individual basis, taking into consideration the chosen sport, achievements to date, selection process, league structure and sporting aspirations.
The funding can be used towards legitimate costs incurred to train or compete in your chosen sport, including the following:
- Competition entry fees
- Gym membership
- Travel and accommodation to competitions
- Essential sports equipment and clothing
- Facility fees
- Physiotherapy
- Sports Psychologist fees
- Health & Nutritional Advice (Health MOT assessment)

There are some external scholarships and awards available for students who are studying abroad. Below are some of the scholarships we are aware of, but it is a good idea to do your own research to find out about scholarships that are available from your region.
Butex Scholarships including the Sustainability Abroad Scholarship are worth £600 and are for students studying abroad in the UK for a semester or an academic year. Butex Sustainability Abroad Scholarships for 2025 are now CLOSED!

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides eligible German students funding towards study abroad costs
Lånekassen provides eligible Norwegian students supplementary tuition fee grants.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is open to US undergraduate students and is a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Tobitate! The Japanese Government offers various opportunities for students to embrace the chance to study abroad.
Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships (USA) include the Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship, which provides funding for one academic year of study in another country.
IIE-Study Abroad Funding (USA) is a searchable resource with a database of study abroad scholarships, fellowships and grants
Study Abroad Loans (USA) is a company that offers loans for short term, study abroad and foreign enrolled study.
Fund for Education Abroad (USA) provides scholarships to eligible students from the US
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Seventy-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year.

Professional societies can offer travel awards to their members. Check with societies such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Aeronautical Societies for more information.

Direct Enrol Students
The Study Abroad programme offers students from a non-partner university the opportunity to study at Exeter for one or two semesters. We reserve the right to review and amend the tuition fees each year to take into account inflationary pressures.
