EU convergence for economic transformation
This programme has been developed to offer you the advanced knowledge, skills and understanding of current issues in environment and human health sciences and to equip you with the skills necessary to analyse critically and synthesise a range of information in order to practice effectively as a future leading academic researcher or practitioner. The programme has been developed with reference to the training requirements of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and the UK Faculty of Public Health to maximise your future employability in the exciting new discipline of environment and human health sciences.
The MSc Environment and Human Health is based at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health (ECEHH); a centre at the forefront of policy relevant interdisciplinary research into the links between health and environment. It is located at the Knowledge Spa, an interdisciplinary teaching centre for medical students, nurses and allied health professionals at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. ECEHH is part of the University of Exeter Medical School, and is supported by investment from the European Regional Development Fund and the European Social Fund Convergence Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Contributors to the programme include researchers from ECEHH and visiting experts from partner organisations including the Met Office, Age UK and the World Health Organisation. You will also benefit from a regular seminar and lecture series.
You will develop knowledge and understanding of theories and concepts in environment and human health and gain a detailed understanding of ecological public health, the relationship of health to environment as well as the social determinants of health and healthcare systems. You will explore the principles and practice of environmental science, using practical and technological tools.
Students from a wide range of academic and practice backgrounds in Public Health, Health Promotion and Environmental Science will develop skills to identify and apply the latest research evidence. You will learn how to interpret epidemiological data connecting people, place and health, including Geographical Information Science (GIS) data mapping. You will also explore how our environment (including the beautiful Cornish coast) can be harnessed to improve health and wellbeing across the lifespan. Field trips and case studies will help to contextualise your learning about the reciprocal relationship between health and environment.
On completion you will be ready to apply your knowledge and skills in a variety of contexts including Public and Environmental Health, Health Promotion and workplace wellbeing. With the support of the EU Convergence Programme, students and graduates are able to apply for paid internships with Cornwall-based small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to explore the commercial opportunities of health and environment.
