Dr James M. Page has been an Honorary Fellow in the School of Government and International Affairs (SGIA), Durham University, since 2016, prior to which he was a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) and SGIA, Durham University.
In 2021, he was a visiting scholar at the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit (AREU), Afghanistan’s leading think-tank. From 2009 to 2015 he served as a United Nations Political Affairs Officer in Afghanistan, including as Special Assistant to the Director, Political, United Nations Assistance Mission Afghanistan (UNAMA), and as portfolio lead, Security Sector Reform, Transition and Transformation (political).
He has been invited to provide lectures, talks, and presentations, for example at Durham University, NATO, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), the South Asia Democratic Form (SADF), and the British International Studies Association (BISA). He has also advised various entities.
His works have been published for instance by the European Journal of International Security (EJIS), the National Interest, the London School of Economics (LSE), Perspectives on Terrorism, and the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).
His research interests include: drones, related technologies and their implications for war and peace; policy, strategy, and security in theory and practice; security sector reform and civil-military relations; (counter-)terrorism and (counter-)insurgency; the Just War tradition and reasoning; diplomacy in conflict; and area studies principally concerning Afghanistan, the region and the (Persian/Arabian) Gulf.
He holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of St Andrews with a thesis on drones, an M.Litt. in International Security Studies from the University of St Andrews, a Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods from Durham University, and a BSc (Hons) from City University, London (now City St George’s, London University).
