Strategy and Security Institute (SSI)

Research

The Strategy and Security Institute (SSI) is a leading centre for applied research in international security and strategic studies. Our work is driven by the need to turn academic insight into real-world impact - supporting defence, diplomacy, and decision-making in a fast-moving world.

We take an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach, drawing on expertise across political science, ethics, law, data science, and military studies. Research areas include:

  • AI and military decision-making
  • Cyber and data security
  • Conflict, corruption, and fragile states
  • Environmental security and climate resilience
  • Migration and border security
  • The ethics and legal frameworks of war

SSI academics and affiliates are widely published experts whose work informs strategic thinking in government, the armed forces, and international institutions.

Current research initiatives include:

  • A new interdisciplinary programme on AI and decision-making in military contexts, led by Professor Anthony King
  • A forthcoming research stream on maritime strategy and great power competition, developed by Dr David Blagden
  • The latest Defence, Security & Resilience (DSR) research compendium brings together compelling, cross-disciplinary insights from University of Exeter experts on critical issues including nuclear deterrence, AI deployment at scale, climate change and military readiness, the law of armed conflict, and online radicalisation - reflecting the depth and diversity of research emerging from the wider SSI academic community.
