Postgraduate study designed for professionals

At the heart of SSI’s teaching is the MA in Applied Security and Strategy (MStrat), a distinctive postgraduate programme that blends academic depth with practical application. Designed for working professionals - including those from the armed forces, government, and international organisations - the MStrat offers a rigorous yet flexible environment in which to build strategic expertise.

Whether you're on secondment from the Ministry of Defence, transitioning into a civilian role, or seeking to elevate your impact within a public or private institution, the MStrat equips you with the analytical, decision-making, and leadership skills essential for success in today’s complex security environment.

The MStrat relaunch: September 2025

Relaunching in 2025, the new MStrat builds on its established reputation while introducing an enhanced and modernised curriculum.

Half of the programme is compulsory, with the remainder offering flexible study options drawn from across the University, including specialist areas such as data science and international relations.

Having now spent a few weeks working in the Whitehall bubble, I can cope with the relentless workload and intensity because of how the course prepared me. Learning how to better prioritise tasks, deliver high-quality outputs on time and keep seeking out new opportunities has set me above most. Days can be exhausting but my ability to cope has improved tenfold following being part of the MStrat.

What the MStrat gave me was the ability to perform in the strategic environment and to confidently speak with senior stakeholders. The fusion of academic study, combined with applied work pushed me to think beyond commenting on decision-making to considering what I would have done in the same circumstances. This mindset has served me well in my profession and I have not come across any other Master’s courses which provide such insight into the practicalities of decision making at the strategic level.

MSc Security and Data Science

Graduates will have a dual speciality in data science skills and strong knowledge of the security-threat landscape and how security, defence, and law enforcement organisations are adapting to the novel opportunities and threats posed by emerging technologies, particularly data and AI.

Global Executive MBA in Defence and Space

Within this program the Strategy and Security Institute, in collaboration with the Archaeology and History Department, will be delivering a module focussing on Defence and Space Procurement and Acquisition.
