The University of Exeter wins the Universities HR 2023 Wellbeing Award!
We have won the Universities HR 2023 Award in the Wellbeing Category! The award is for the development of this network of Colleague Mental Health Champions and the ‘supporting the mental wellbeing of your team’ online training for managers. Our entry was applauded by the judges as “showing a clear, consistent and more longitudinal approach".
We have appointed Colleague Mental Health Champions across the University, in all divisions and faculties, to promote positive mental health and wellbeing within our community. This expands on the vision set out in the University Strategy 2030, promoting and prioritising the health and wellbeing of our people.
What is a 'Colleague Mental Health Champion'?
Champions will help promote mental health awareness and support practices that improve wellbeing. This voluntary role does not replace the support for wellbeing from our counselling service and EAP Spectrum Life, Occupational Health, Human Resources or Colleague Wellbeing teams or Mental Health First Aiders. Colleague Mental Health Champions will work alongside these teams to support colleagues in their teams by:
- raising awareness of mental health and wellbeing in the workplace with a particular focus on key challenges/ barriers within their faculty
- challenging stigma surrounding mental health
- role modelling positive mental health work practices and healthy behaviours in the workplace and encouraging others to take part
- talking to colleagues openly about mental health and signposting to internal and external support services and resources
- coordinating and promoting awareness-raising activities and campaigns for colleagues
Champions are listed by division/faculty below (some Champions are listed in more than one). If you would prefer to speak to someone who isn’t from your area, you are welcome to contact any Champion below.
Please be mindful that while the Champion volunteers are happy to be approached for a 1-1 conversation and to signpost relevant support options, they are not trained counsellors so are not able to provide ongoing emotional support. If you do think counselling would be helpful, we recommend exploring the support available from our EAP Spectrum Life.
