A snapshot into studying History at the University of Exeter
As one of the largest History departments in the UK, we offer a depth and breadth of subject expertise rarely matched by other institutions with excellent access to top academics in specialist fields.
Within the department we have experts in Early Modern Studies (1500-1800), Medieval Studies, Medical History, Maritime Historical Studies, Imperial and Global History, and Violence and Conflict. These link to our six dedicated research centres and allow you to choose a specific pathway in one of these areas or you can take a selection of modules from across the board. Public History and Heritage are also great strengths of our department.
The university Library has extensive holdings, audio-visual collections and manuscripts in our Special Collections, and the city itself offers many opportunities with both Exeter Cathedral Library Archives and the Devon Heritage Centre containing further significant manuscripts, documents and early printed books.

Studying History MA
Having completed my undergraduate degree here, I already knew how fantastic the history department was and it was the obvious choice for my postgraduate studies. Having an interest in medical history, I was particularly inspired by that pathway option and the new and exciting modules focusing on public history and digital humanities. What I have enjoyed most about my MA has been the opportunity to really tailor my assessments and research to my own areas of interest and the support in doing this.
