Mathematics is at the heart of all Science and Engineering subjects. This module covers topics that are fundamental to engineers in their professional careers.
In particular, there is a strong emphasis on the direct application of mathematics to engineering problems.
This module will deliver and summatively assess the Engineering Council’s Accreditation of Higher Education Programme (AHEP-4) Learning Outcomes that are indicated in brackets in the ILO section below.
On successful completion of this module you should be able to:
Module Specific Skills and Knowledge:
1. demonstrate an understanding of key mathematical concepts for engineering and apply them to simple problems in mechanics, electrical circuit theory and evolution problems (B1);
Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge:
2. formulate questions in mathematical terms and hence solve problems encountered in engineering-related areas (B1);
3. take data from a range of sources and undertake simple modelling tasks (B1);
Personal and Key Transferable / Employment Skills and Knowledge:
4. Apply mathematical principles to systematically analyse problems (B1);
5. communicate mathematical concepts and processes coherently, both orally and in writing, using correct notation;
- Algebra and functions;
- Complex numbers and complex variables;
- Vector algebra;
- Matrices;
- Differential calculus and applications;
- Integral calculus;
- First and second order ordinary differential equations;
- Partial differentiation;
- Statistics;
- Probability
- MATLAB
