Module description

Effective management skills are essential for a successful operations manager. This module will provide comprehensive insights into all aspects of people management and organisational governance, from understanding motivational theories to implementing organisational policies and legislative guidelines that promote equity and diversity. You will explore both theoretical and practical strategies for developing and managing teams, with a strong emphasis on recruitment, selection, and talent development. Upon completing this module, you will not only grasp the principles of managing individuals and teams but also understand how to leverage policies to enhance wellbeing, diversity, and performance within an organisation.

Module aims - intentions of the module

  • To introduce the underpinning theories and concepts of motivation.
  • To consider the implications and impact of organisational governance, including the Equality Act 2010 on achieving inclusive leadership and for stakeholders.
  • To introduce strategies for ethics and values based leadership as well as strategies for change management within the organisation.
  • To consider how to recruit effectively and how to manage performance/ underperformance, including analysing performance data.

On successfully completing the module you will be able to...

  • 1. Summarise and assess organisational policies and procedures, and relevant regulatory and legislative requirements and practise stakeholder communication around the practical implications of the policies and procedures. (K2, K22, S11)
  • 2. Discuss and practise applying organisational policies and legislative guidelines to lead and influence the team and individuals to support an inclusive culture of equity, diversity, and the promotion of well-being. (K3, S6)
  • 3. Describe, analyse and practise approaches to people management, for example, recruitment, performance management, reward, and talent management and resource planning.(K4, S7)
  • 4. Practise analysing performance data for individuals and teams to identify areas for improvement. (S4)

Syllabus plan

  • Masterclass Day 1 and 2: Organisational governance, motivation, ethical leadership, equality, diversity, inclusion, recruitment, selection and managing performance.
  • Weekly webinars to consolidate masterclass content as well as cover organisational culture, including organisational specific principles, wellbeing, coaching and mentoring.
  • Assignment workshop
  • 1-1 with module lead to discuss content and presentation submission.

Re-assessment notes

All passed components of the module will be rolled forward and will not be reassessed in the event of module failure.

Deferral – if you have been deferred for any assessment you will be expected to submit the relevant assessment. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be expected to submit the relevant assessment. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of referral will be capped at 40%
