About this course:

Drawing on recent research into supervisor roles and the postgraduate research student experience, the session will cover a range of topics including barriers and enablers to timely completion, good practice in conducting and recording supervisions, supervising through the varied phases of the doctorate, administrative requirements of postgraduate supervision and information about the Researcher Development programme at the University of Exeter.

You will have an opportunity to explore aspects of supervision with experienced colleagues.

Learning outcomes:

As a result of attending this course, you will be able to: - Understand the landscape of doctoral supervision both in general and at Exeter.

- Have an awareness of the challenges supervisors might face, and the flexible nature of doctoral supervision.

- Be aware of sources of support.

- Understand the admin requirements at Exeter and the TQA Manual regarding supervisory responsibilities.

- Be aware of training and development opportunities at Exeter for PGRs.

- Appreciate the research background underpinning and informing doctoral supervision (evidence based practice).

- Carefully consider the process of becoming a reflective practitioner / learner / skilled practitioner.

Who should attend this course:

This session is designed to support and inform academic and research colleagues who are new or relatively new to the role of doctoral supervisor, or are new to doctoral supervision at the University of Exeter.

It is mandatory that all supervisors undertake appropriate training prior to beginning any supervisory activities at the University:
