Notion STAR® Coach Pilot programme

Following employee feedback in the 2016 Employee Engagement Survey and our ongoing commitment to support our academic and PS employees to thrive (People Strategy) we are seeking ways to develop employees to improve their coaching skills.

We believe a coaching style of communication plays a very important role in developing people to support employees to be the best they can be and, for our academic colleagues in a tutoring role, to support students in all aspects of their studying and life at the University and beyond.

To deliver these skills we are piloting Notion STAR® Coach which is a new blended-learning programme designed and delivered by Notion.

STAR® Coach

STAR® Coach offers people the chance to incorporate more of an ‘enquiry-led approach’ into their day-to-day interactions creating powerful opportunities to increase engagement and improve performance and the productivity of those you work with be that your team, colleagues or students.

The programme consists of 10 modules:

  • Welcome - including a self-assessment of current coaching skills
  • What is coaching
  • Why coaching works
  • Intro to STAR®
  • S is for STOP - Stop, step back, check or change state
  • T is for THINK - Is this a coachable moment?
  • A is for ASK - Powerful questions
  • R is for RESULTS - Agree next steps, outcome and way forward
  • Becoming a STAR® coach and summative assessment

The pilot programme will run for 9 months from 2nd July 2018, closing on 29th March.

All learners on the pilot will be given access to the online content so they can then work through the programme at their own pace. Learners will have continued access to the online content for the full 9 month period and can repeat modules as many times as they like and also continue to attend the live learning stations even after they have completed the formal aspects of the programme to consolidate their learning.

Learners should aim to complete the 10 modules within 5-8 weeks of the programme start. They will then book onto a Learning Circle.

By committing just 1-2 hours a week, the entire programme can be completed in 6-10 weeks.


End of module assessments are built into the programme. A score of 70% or more on each module is required to pass the programme and move onto the practitioner module.

Each learner gets access to all content of each 'phase' with a personalised learning journey. Delegates work at their own pace (each phase is approx. 4 weeks duration, 1-2 hrs per week) with repeat access for the duration of the licence.

Approximately 4.5 hours of online learning, supplemented with approximately 3.5 hours of learning log reflections to be completed as part of your normal workplace activities.

Practitioner Modules: Include a Live 90 minute Action Learning Circle via Zoom (with Telephone or Video Conference options from any device).

Delegates: The Pilot will be run for 25 Academic colleagues and 25 Professional Services colleagues, selected by application.

Application: We are inviting applications from Professional Services Grades E-Senior Manager grades and Academics of any job title or academic job family.

Duration: up to 9 months

Delivery: Blended learning through online content, online Live Learning Circles with a tutor, optional 1 hr bi-monthly ‘Live Learning Station’ Q&A Calls with a Notion Tutor.
