Prospective staff

How to apply

We aim to make applying for a job at the University of Exeter as easy as possible.

Vacancies are displayed on our website, placed in relevant publications, and displayed on other websites such as jobs.ac.uk.

Apply online

For speed and convenience applications are done online. This allows us to contact you quickly by email throughout the application process. If you apply for another post with us some of the fields will be pre-populated with your information, making a repeat application quick and easy.

  • Once you have identified a role you would like to apply for click the Apply button. It will ask you to either log in or create a new profile. If you have not applied for a job with us before, set up your profile using an email address and a password. You can also create a profile using your Facebook, Google or LinkedIn details.
  • This will take you through to our online portal where you will fill in your application form with Personal Details, Right to Work, Recruiting Monitoring, attaching a Curriculum Vitae and a Cover Letter, or submitting a supporting statement. The exact layout of the online application will be dependent on the specific role but all will require you to fill out the information, clicking 'next' once you have finished. Please ensure  you regularly save your application form. Once you have completed the sections you will be able to submit under the “Application Confirmation” heading.

The exact layout of the online application will depend on the specific role you are applying for. For all applications , you will need to show how you meet the essential criteria (and desirable if relevant) as set out in the person specification.

If you are required to write a supporting statement or upload a covering letter, this is your opportunity to provide information to the recruiting panel on your experience and skills and how they are relevant for the particular role you are applying for. The best way to do this is by breaking down the essential criteria (and desirable if relevant to you) from the person specification and addressing each one separately, giving examples of where you have demonstrated the particular skill or behaviour. If you haven't got examples for everything, it is fine to refer to something similar that you have done. The recruiting panel will use this information to shortlist candidates for interview. There is a lot of advice and guidance online about writing a supporting statement if you have not written one before (just search 'writing a supporting statement').

As a Disability Confident employer, where practical, we offer interviews to all applicants with disabilities who meet the minimum criteria for the job. If you require an adjustment to the recruitment process, you will be able to state this as part of your application.

You can also contact us regarding adjustments, by emailing recruitmentadmin@exeter.ac.uk

Further information about reasonable adjustments can be found in Your recruitment journey/Support during your recruitment journey.

As a University, we have a long track record of embracing emerging technologies to strengthen how we work and deliver innovative outcomes. In that same spirit, we recognise that applicants may use technology to support the preparation of their applications and interviews. As the use of AI becomes increasingly commonplace, we welcome its responsible use as a tool to support, rather than replace, applicants' own skills, knowledge and experience.

Used well, AI can help you gather some powerful initial insights, sharpen your thinking, or enhance visual presentations. What it should never do is take your place in the conversation; providing very generalised or false statements or generating live interview responses using AI undermines both fairness in the recruitment process, and our ability to understand your genuine approach to your work.

The use of AI is optional, and our interview process is designed to let you demonstrate your abilities and allow every candidate to play to their strengths, whatever these may be.

If you do decide to use AI tools, we encourage you to be transparent about how you have incorporated AI into your preparation. This allows us to recognise your creativity and skill in leveraging advanced tools while also seeing your unique perspectives. We would also love to hear how you have built your AI skillset and how you can apply this to the role you are applying for.

We would like to stress the importance of giving personal examples from your previous experience where possible in your supporting statement. If you are shortlisted for an interview based on your application, you will be expected to talk through the experience you have detailed and to provide specific examples.

If you are using AI technology, please tailor your applications and interview answers to ensure you are:

  1. Showing authenticity and your personal voice - a genuine expression of your experiences and aspirations can set you apart from others.
  2. Tailoring your application to be relevant to the specific role and University strategy and values.
  3. Expressing your passion, values and personality. This can often be better achieved through your unique communication style.
  4. Providing specific examples to highlight where you have relevant experience and skills, demonstrating your ability to problem solve and think through situations.

Our applications are not screened using AI technology – all applications are reviewed by the hiring panel for the role, so remember that you are telling a real person why you are a great fit, not trying to match an algorithm!

Information which makes up your application is being requested to enable the University of Exeter to make employment decisions and meet statutory obligations. Any information provided to the University in this context will be treated confidentially and used only by managers, members of the University, Human Resources, superannuation and payroll during the course of your employment. Note that for some academic applications it may be necessary to share your application with non panel members who have expertise in the relevant academic discipline.
