LGBTQ+ Student Support

We want to make it as safe and easy as possible for you to bring your whole self to University, and be comfortable being who you are.

Please click through the headings below to find documents, resources, and information which will help to support you as an LGBTQ+ student at The University of Exeter. For additional queries or support, please contact the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team.

Students can view their personal University-held data from the Exeter Student Records System

To change details, students can contact the Student Records Manager, from the Education and Student Experience Team. They can make changes to a student's name and gender information confidentially. This will also affect historical records (where possible). If a student wishes to have a new Student ID card, they can send an e-mail to the Student Records Manager who will have a new card printed free of charge. Students can also register a 'preferred' name on the IT system

Please note (name changes)

Students are able to change their name on University systems without evidence of deed poll paperwork. Notification of name change is sufficient for records to be changed. However, a change in name from that in which a person has applied or enrolled is likely to require changes to other organisations' records, for example, UCAS, funders, banks, and HMRC, to avoid confusion.

Students should be aware that changing their name on University systems will impact the name that appears on their degree certificate. If this is not their legal name, this may cause some issues with future employers and legal documentation. Students are advised that there is no problem with changing their name on University systems whilst at University, but this will need to be raised again with the Student Records Manager prior to graduation, to discuss options, or students will need to formally change their name by statutory declaration or deed poll prior to certificates being issued.

The Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Team along with the LGBTQ+ Staff Network are currently developing a map of accessible and inclusive spaces at the University of Exeter, including a map of gender-inclusive facilities across our campuses.

Please keep an eye on this page for updates.
