Showcase of a new play exploring the story of James Lovelock’s Gaia theory

‘in Gaia we are just another species, neither the owners nor the stewards of this planet. Our future depends much more upon a right relationship with Gaia than with the never-ending drama of human interest’.

Event details

Shapeshifter Productions and Gaia’s Company are collaborating to deliver a multi-layered, interactive theatre, music and education project called ‘Gaia and the Globe’ created by Peter Horton and funded by Arts Council England. Based firmly on the work of James Lovelock, one of Britain’s greatest scientists, and his main collaborator, the microbiologist Lynn Margulis, the project exposes the true power, elegance and relevance of the Gaian world view, which sees the Earth as a self-regulating system.

The latest IPCC report tells us that 'it's now or never' if we are to tackle climate change and that we will have to 'make drastic changes to how we live our lives'. 'The 'Gaia and the Globe' project is at the forefront of explaining how we might create a more inclusive, equitable, exciting and fulfilling way of organising our lives by understanding how the planetary system really works.

“Our responses to the pandemic along with the increasing threat of climate change have shown that, as a species, we are out of our depth when confronted by the natural problems we have brought upon ourselves. The science of Gaia is fundamental to our understanding of how the natural world really works. 'Gaia and the Globe’ explores all these things. This phase of research and development is very exciting; I want the performers to own the piece, not just to act in it, but to be involved in the creative process and to contribute to its development. We’ll start with a series of scenes and sequences which the performers will improvise around, so that the play starts to have a life of its own.” Peter Horton

The creative team for ‘Gaia and the Globe’ will be based at Exeter University, with support from GSI (Global System Institute), improvising and developing the script and musical score. This ’show and tell’ event will present the progress of the piece, at the end of the 10-day research and development period with a Q &A after.

'Our future depends much more upon a right relationship with Gaia than with the never-ending drama of human interest'. James Lovelock
