Ancient Medicine in Macedonia and Northern Greece: New Approaches to the Classical and Hellenistic Periods

Workshop organised by the Centre for the study of Science, Technology, Ancient Medicine and Philosophy (STAMP) at the University of Exeter and the Antigonid Network.

Event details

Recent archaeological finds of surgical instruments and other medical items, as well as the Hippocratic writings themselves, put the spotlight on northern Greece and neighbouring locations—on Thessaly, Thasos, Macedonia and the Black Sea, for example—as key sites, if not centres of medical activity in the Classical and Hellenistic periods. This workshop combines old and new evidence, old and new techniques of analysis, to investigate the culture and practices, organisation and materials, of health and healing in these places, and asks how that shifted geographical focus might change our view of ancient Greek medicine more broadly.

Speakers include:

Dr Despina Ignatiadou (Hellenic National Archaeological Museum Athens)

Dr David Leith (University of Exeter)

Dr Effie Photos-Jones (Glasgow University)

Attendance is free but you do need to register (in person or online):
