Egenis seminar series. This paper explores cultural transmission through an examination of the reproduction of cheese making knowledge in two locales, namely Nottinghamshire, England and the Auvergne, in France. Both drawing upon and extending the “terroir” concept, I argue that reproducing the cultured practice of cheese making entails acting within a complex ecology comprising everything from lactobacilli to supra-state bureaucracies. I conclude that culture itself is more than a human project, and that in order to reproduce ourselves as cultured beings, we must account for and act within what Whatmore has called a “more-than human” world.
