Course Title: South West Institutions' Middle Managers Programme (SWIMM)
Theme: Leadership and Management
Category: Leadership & management: non award-bearing programme
About this programme:

A regional management programme for middle managers working in HE.

SWIMM is an innovative, three day, residential programme for middle managers working in South West universities.

The programme gives managers the chance to reflect on their role and to further develop some key management skills and techniques, needed in today’s universities. Participants benefit greatly (see comments below) from the opportunity to liaise and network with peers in similar roles from across the sector, in a supportive atmosphere, away from the normal working environment.

For further information see the SWIMM Flyer 2019

Residential: Wednesday 6 March (09:30 start) to Friday 8 March 2019 (13:00 close)

Learning outcomes:

As a result of attending this programme, you will have:

  • Furthered your understanding of the context in which HEI's operate by networking with manager undertaking similar roles in the sector.
  • Looked at the way in which you see yourself as a manager, your management style, and the ways in which people work together in teams and are motivated to perform.
  • Developed management tools and techniques which can be applied back in your own place of work.
  • Considered a range of management skills affecting your work and created strategies for your own development.
  • Considered your personal development needs, and have completed a learning diary.
Who should attend this programme:

Professional Services middle managers (Grades F-G), new to their role or those who would like to further develop their management skills. It will not be appropriate for anyone other than managers already in post. (Please see flyer for more information).

NB: To get the full benefit from this intensive programme, there will be team and project work in the evenings. So, delegates will be expected to stay overnight i.e. there is no day delegate rate.

The fee for 2019 is £795 per delegate.

Line manager approval is needed, as your College/Service will be required to fund the cost.

Fee includes all course materials; a 24-page individualised profile; a 3 day residential stay (2 nights' accommodation and all meals included). The cost does not include travel to and from events, nor additional overnight stays.  This represents excellent value for money. On the open market similar residential programmes might cost £2,500.

What previous participants have said about the course: (at another university):
  • Great opportunity to gain a wider perspective, to challenge yourself, to address issues, to think through approaches, to meet others, to stretch yourself.
  • The course has been absolutely fantastic. A wonderful opportunity to stop and critically reflect on my management skills.
  • The various profiles/questionnaires helped me self-evaluate and understand more about my management style.
  • I highly recommend this course, great opportunity for reflection & analysis. Presenters are excellent & structure of course made me feel valued & appreciated and worthy of investment. I would like others to gain this as I’m sure it will have a lasting impact.
  • To be away from my day job and allow myself time to think is wonderful. I now have a clear idea of how to plan and do tasks I have been putting off.
  • I think it will make a HUGE difference to how I manage my team & support them so they are happier & we are productive in the right way.
