Grand Challenges 2019

Mental Health Support for Refugees

This group identfied that refugees were a particularly vulnerable population for mental health, and that refugees were often denied access to mental health support services. They therefore aimed to raise awareness around the mental health difficulties refugees face in the UK, particularly in the South West.

During Grand Challenges week, the team of 7 made a series of dramatic posters, conveying messages of vulnerability, refugee mental health experiences, and how you can help. In addition, this team made an instagram account with content around refugee mental health and what the team got up to during the Grand Challenges week. Furthermore, they made multiple soundcloud podcasts, termed "New Homes", which aims to create an accessible platform to showcase the experiences refugees and asylum seekers face when resettling.

Here is the group presentation which they presented on the friday of Grand Challenges week.

This project seeks to explore how moving countries can be a major factor in mental health and access to organisational support. There is more to simply transitioning into a new community. Listen to reflections on the personal stories in engaging with British society as a newcomer, stigmatisation and resilience.
