Studying in a new country is a big decision to make, and we understand how important it is to have somewhere to call 'home' during your time with us. Our student residences have their own distinctive character and offer you a safe, secure environment to live and study in.
As you start your Study Abroad or Exchange journey, whether you're coming to Exeter for a full year or one semester, we look forward to welcoming you to the University.

Full Year Students
If you're coming for the full year starting in September, you will qualify for our accommodation guarantee and you will be able to apply for accommodation along with other home and international undergraduate students.

Building development works in close proximity to some existing residences are currently underway and will be ongoing throughout 2026-27 – find out more.
If you are joining us in January as a full-year exchange student (i.e. January to December) then you do not qualify for our accommodation guarantee but you are still welcome to apply for accommodation with us and we may be able to make you an offer if we have availability.
In this instance, you will need to make three separate accommodation applications. Please note that these will not all be available to complete at the same time, so you will need to check when the application opening date is. This will also mean you would be required to move rooms between each contract.
To apply, please complete the following:
- Semester 2 application - this opens in November (please check the website for opening date) and rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
- Summer application - this opens in late April. You can find more details about the current year's offering and the application opening date here.
- Semester 1 application - this opens in May (please check the website for opening date) and rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Short term Study Abroad and International Exchange students for academic year 2026-27
- If you are joining us as part of a Study Abroad and International Exchange* programme for one semester, you will be able to apply for our small number of rooms in short-term accommodation.
- The date that you will be able to apply from depends on whether you are joining us in Semester 1 or Semester 2 - take a look at the When to Apply section below for help.
- Semester 1 - We have a limited number of rooms available to Semester students and applications will be dealt with in date order of us receiving the applications. If you are unable to secure accommodation through the University, there are other accommodation options in Exeter - find out more on the private accommodation webpages.
- Semester 2 - As well as a limited number of rooms available to Semester students, we may also have additional availability within other residences. Details of this would be made known to you at the time of offer. Applications will be dealt with in date order of us receiving the applications.
*Accommodation is limited. You can only apply as a Study Abroad or Exchange Student if this is your first time studying at Exeter. Students who are returning to complete an additional Study Abroad or Exchange placement will need to secure private accommodation in the city.

Applications and Offers
- You will not be able to apply for your accommodation until your Study Abroad and International Exchange application has been processed by the Global Opportunities Inbound Team and you have been issued with your University of Exeter Student ID number.
- By accepting an offer of accommodation, you will be entering a legally binding contract. This means you will be responsible for making the payment for the entire length of your accommodation contract as detailed in your offer.
