Module description
This module is designed for those of you who have completed ARA 2164 Intermediate Turkish I (or equivalent proficiency). It seeks to enhance your reading, writing and communication skills in Modern Turkish. By the end of the course, you are expected to achieve basic to intermediate proficiency in the language. Both written texts and audio-visual material, you will be able to work on all language-related skills, including reading, listening, speaking, writing and cultural knowledge. The module covers all the major grammatical structures of Turkish. The aim is to provide a thorough grounding in grammar with constant practice in the spoken and written language. Students should reach a standard that will enable them to read newspaper articles, short stories and novels with the help of a dictionary.
Module aims - intentions of the module
This module aims to develop your skills in reading, writing and speaking Turkish, continuing on from Intermediate Turkish (ARA2164, In term 1). The module has the specific aims of developing your knowledge of the Turkish grammar, Turkish language and literature, through the reading of Intermediate level Turkish texts; capacity to carry on conversations in Turkish at Intermediate level; deeper understanding of the importance of the Turkish language and civilization in the broader context of Islamic civilization and culture.

Syllabus plan
Whilst the module’s precise content may vary from year to year, it is envisaged that the syllabus will cover some or all of the following topics:
Teaching varies between lectures and commentary on the main textbook (Ä°stanbul II), in-class readings, translation and discussion of Turkish texts; translation (Turkish >English, English> Turkish) exercises done collectively by the whole class; regular vocabulary reviews; the reading of poetic and prose texts aloud together; individual students give presentations of grammatical points or texts which they have studied or read at home. Handouts are provided regularly, including sheets that discuss difficult points of grammar, and literary texts (prose and poetry) to illustrate aspects of Turkish language. It is expected that all students will learn the proper pronunciation of the vocabulary featured in the textbook by recourse to the teacher during class and to these tapes privately over the course of the week. Translation exercises are regularly given as homework, which is later corrected and analysed by the whole class.

Re-assessment notes
Re-assessment takes place when the summative assessment has not been completed by the original deadline, and the student has been allowed to refer or defer it to a later date (this only happens following certain criteria and is always subject to exam board approval). For obvious reasons, re-assessments cannot be the same as the original assessment and so these alternatives are set. In cases where the form of assessment is the same, the content will nevertheless be different.
