Module description

This is a core module for MArabic students. Having spent a year abroad in an Arabic- speaking country, you now have a deeper knowledge of Arabic language and culture. You can also speak a dialect of Arabic. This module builds on this experience and develops active and passive learning of Arabic through a wide range of written and audio-visual materials. It will enable you to strengthen your awareness of the different styles and registers of Arabic and to develop skills in composition and translation. The module also aims to consolidate the use of colloquial Arabic.

Module aims - intentions of the module

Building on the year abroad learning experience, this module aims to develop a deeper knowledge of grammatical and syntactical structures; to develop active and passive learning of Arabic through a wide range of written and audio-visual materials; to strengthen your awareness of different styles and registers of Arabic; to broaden your skills in using Arabic; and to develop skills in composition and translation. The module also aims to consolidate the use of colloquial Arabic.

On successfully completing the module you will be able to...

  • 1. Understand and competently employ grammatical and syntactical features of written Arabic and spoken Arabic;
  • 2. Demonstrate the ability to read various genres of Arabic texts, write in Arabic, as well as translate from and into written Arabic, with and without the use of bilingual and monolingual dictionaries;
  • 3. Demonstrate the ability to listen to and understand colloquial and media Arabic and communicate in standard and colloquial Arabic;

  • 4. Competently express ideas in Arabic in writing;
  • 5. Confidently communicate nuanced thoughts and ideas verbally in Arabic;

  • 7. Communicate effectively (in written form and orally) in a foreign language indicating enhanced communication skills.

Syllabus plan

Whilst the module’s precise content may vary from year to year, it is envisaged that the syllabus will cover some or all of the following topics:

  • Reading: You will be introduced to different types of texts, editorials, texts on history, current affairs, literature etc.
  • Writing: You will be introduced to different styles of writing. You will learn how to present a topic, a discussion and a conclusion.
  • Translation:  You will become familiar with a range of text types by translating them from Arabic into English and from English into Arabic.
  • Grammar: You will develop your knowledge of grammar and syntax.
  • Listening and Speaking: This includes listening to media Arabic, broadcasts, news, interviews, documentaries etc. and speaking about various topics in colloquial or modern standard Arabic.
