Module description

This module will introduce you to issues surrounding environmentalism, settler colonialism, Indigenous knowledge systems, Indigenous resilience, and racism. It will introduce you to theoretical frameworks and practical examples of the sometimes fraught connections between environmentalism and race. It draws connections between race, colonialism and environmental justice. Indigenous and non-white communities have been at the face of environmental destruction and extractive economies, and this module will look at historical contexts, cultural reactions, and political activism in the face of climate change and the Anthropocene. While not seeking to homogenise a “non-white” environmentalism, it will seek to connect different discourses around social, racial, and environmental justice.

Module aims - intentions of the module

The aims of this module are:

  • To introduce you to a range of non-European/settler colonial frameworks for looking at the environment
  • To consider some of the cultural reactions to environmental destruction and climate change within both North/South American Indigenous and African communities
  • To consider the contribution non-Western epistemologies can make to current debates about climate change, sustainability, and relations with the non-human
  • To examine case studies of conservation projects that incorporate Indigenous perspectives

The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to redo the assessment(s) as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.
