Module description

This module introduces you to nursing practice and education. You will explore theories and models of nursing, while learning about situations likely seen in practice to prepare you for clinical placements, including how to support your own health and wellbeing as a healthcare professional. Biopsychosocial, philosophical, and sociological theories informing how we understand health and mental health will be investigated, alongside care practices linked to these theories. The aim is for you to develop knowledge that is adaptable to patient needs, and the needs of their significant others, such as carers and family members.

Module aims - intentions of the module

This module offers an exciting introduction to the world of modern nursing and will develop your skills, attitudes and behaviours which underpin the rest of your professional life as a nurse.

The overall aim is to introduce the core concepts of nursing and will work to build links across the other modules of this year. This will occur across numerous exciting learning and teaching opportunities including lectures, seminars, small group work and clinical skills.

The module supports your academic and professional development as a nurse with a variety of assessments which tap into and develop distinct transferable skills including but not limited to numeracy and academic skills. It will encourage you to work in small groups and share ideas, communicating complex information and asking questions.

Through this module, you will be introduced to and develop an understanding of Exeter’s seven pillars of nursing, which will enable you to develop your understanding of the core values and complexity underpinning nursing practice.

Within this module you will continue to work across the seven pillars of nursing; patient and public involvement, fundamental essentials of nursing care, evidence for practice; no health without mental health, leadership and management of healthcare, global health and ethics and professionalism.

Academy of Nursing | Health and Care Professions | University of Exeter

Further to this you will continue to demonstrate proficiency against the NMC standards of education (https://www.nmc.org.uk/globalassets/sitedocuments/education-standards/future-nurse-proficiencies.pdf)

  • Incorporating knowledge from all Stage 1 modules to inform practical demonstration and training of relevant clinical skills
  • Relating above theories and skills to the delivery of safe and effective person-centred care
  • A discussion of the physical and cognitive changes that occur across the adult lifespan, alongside commonly presenting physical and mental health concerns
  • An introduction to the concept of becoming a reflective practitioner, including the importance of reflection in and on action and lifelong learning to enact individual change
  • An understanding of relevant legislation including health and safety, equality, diversity and inclusion, mental capacity, consent and protection of vulnerable people
  • A development of the understanding of the role of the nurse in a historical and modern context
  • A foundation in the skills required for lifelong learning, including but not limited to academic reading and writing, numeracy calculations, and digital literacy.

Within this module you will also participate in Time for Dementia: a programme facilitated by the Alzheimer’s Society where students are able to meet virtually with a family living with the impact of dementia across a series of virtual visits. Re-assessment notes

Demonstrate the ability to consistently provide safe and effective care underpinned by the evidence base in order to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses (2018) and the Code (2018)

All items of assessment are required for this module. You must pass all items of assessment and demonstrate professionalism and fitness to practise in accordance with University of Exeter Policy and Procedures for Fitness to Practise and the Academy of Nursing attendance policy in order to progress to Stage 2.

In all cases re-assessment will be in the same format as the original assessment. Where you have been referred/deferred for any form of assessment detailed above you will have the opportunity to retake within a specified period from the date that feedback was provided. In the case of failure or mitigation in one or more OSCE assessments, you will only be referred or deferred in the relevant station(s).

If you pass re-assessments taken as a result of deferral, your re-assessment will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment and the overall module mark will not be capped.

If you pass re-assessments taken as a result of referral (i.e. following initial failure in the assessment), the assessment(s) will be capped at 40% but the overall module mark will not be capped.

If you fail re-assessments taken as a result of referral (i.e. following initial failure in the assessment), you will be failed in the module and the programme.
