AIMS - intentions of the module
To relay essential concepts relating to geographical information systems such that candidates can use GIS software independently, efficiently and meaningfully in support of resource assessment and site identification studies for renewable energy projects.

Week 1 Lecture topics: 1. Introduction: What is a GIS? 2. Example applications of GIS 3. Coordinate systems and projections 4. Scale generalisation and georeferencing 5. Representing the real world using spatial data. I 6. Representing the real world using spatial data. II 7. Sources of spatial data 8. Terrain analysis and assessment 9. Spatial data analysis and prediction 10. Spatial statistics 11. Uncertainty analysis for GIS MapInfo Workshops: 1. Installation 2. MapInfo definitions 3. Open existing tables 4. Creating new tables 5. Drawing objects on a map 6. Raster coverages 7. Universal translation of file formats 8. Spatial queries 9. Table menu functionality 10. Changing options and preferences 11. Creating and using layouts 12. Tool manager ArcInfo Workshops Candidates are taken through a short, step-by-step case study exercise using ArcInfo to provide familiarity with the functionality of this software only.
