Module description

This module will help you develop the skills needed to work, lead and successfully drive change in organisations through times of crises. After introducing systematic ways of understanding leadership, we will focus on transformational leadership and its role in guiding change through inspiration and collaboration. Whilst approaching the subject with a critical mind, exploring the ‘dark side’ of leadership, we will highlight the relationship between transformational leadership and the climate emergency, identifying the key traits that leaders must possess to contribute to create more effective, responsible and sustainable organisations. No prior knowledge skills or experience is needed in order to able to take this module. This module is recommended for interdisciplinary pathways.

Module aims - intentions of the module

The module aims to equip you with the ability to apply elements of transformational leadership to your professional career. You will develop transferable skills at a strategic level such as personal effectiveness, enhanced self-awareness, cultural awareness, influence and negotiation. The module builds on recent research and scholarship in the field of leadership, with a particular focus on environmental leadership, the integration of leadership and political ecology and the relevance of leadership for environmental science. The module will draw on research articles and books, discuss with experts in the areas of discussion; and engage you in independent research. Through experiential learning, you will discover your authentic leadership strengths, enhancing self-awareness and personal development. You will also learn to recognise and use the leadership tools to drive change for a sustainable future, through collaboration, communication and influence. For inspiration, guidance and support a series of tutorials, videos, reading material, group forums and facilitated group sessions will be offered in addition to weekly lectures.
