DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

This 1st year module forms part of the Computer Science yearlong placement programme. This non-credit bearing module provides you with both the opportunity and support to develop the employability and personal development skills needed to explore career opportunities and source and apply for a professional placement.

 

Delivery is through a combination of lectures and workshops, predominantly in term 2. Completion of all sessions is strongly advised.

 

AIMS - intentions of the module

This is a non-credit bearing module that aims to prepare you for the tasks and activities related to deciding on what placement to undertake, finding and securing a suitable placement for the third year of your degree.

 

The combination of lectures and workshops focus on career exploration, self-awareness of personal strengths, searching and applying for placements.

Differentiate the employability skills (competencies) relevant to placements or graduate employment.

Identify and critically reflect on personal experiences that demonstrate relevant employability skills.

Locate and interpret information sources to identify academic and employability skills development opportunities on your degree or outside it.

Locate and interpret information sources to identify career options where your degree subject area is essential/desirable/useful.

Appraise the purpose and benefits of undertaking a work placement

Locate appropriate services and resources to help with career planning and placement search.

Research, apply and compete for jobs/roles

Work-based skills e.g. team working, communication, organisation, resilience, commercial awareness, IT etc.

It is envisaged that the syllabus is likely to include the following topics although precise content and order may vary.

  • Introduction to working and the benefits of placements.
  • Self-Reflection – Understand your skills/strengths and how that could influence the placement you undertake or organisations you apply to.
  • Research – Developing your research skills for placements.
  • Placement search
  • Accessing the hidden job market
  • Creating your CV.
  • LinkedIn.

 

Attendance at all lectures and workshops is strongly recommended to maximise your chances of securing a placement.
