Module description

This clinical immersion module provides opportunities for you to demonstrate achievement of specified NMC (2018) Standards of Proficiency for registered nurses as well as adherence to the Code (NMC, 2018).

Subject to the availability of clinical placements, your clinical immersion this year may incorporate both adult and mental health settings.

During the clinical immersion you will participate in the usual full-time working pattern for the service in which you are based, this could include shifts, weekends and nights.

Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors will support, assess and provide feedback and feed forward, recording your progress in your Practice Assessment Document (PAD) and Ongoing Achievement Record (OAR). All areas will meet educational learning audit requirements through the shared quality assurance framework - Educational Audit Process. Mandatory year one proficiencies are specified in your PAD and Ongoing Achievement Record (OAR).

Module aims - intentions of the module

  • The main objective of the module is to enable you to demonstrate safe, effective and professional nursing care alongside a registered healthcare professional.
  • You will demonstrate achievement of a selection of the Standards of proficiency for registered nurses, including annexes A & B, as required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2018).
  • You will demonstrate the ability to initiate, and provide safe, evidence-based, holistic, person-centred, compassionate care in a range of settings.

Your BSc Nursing programme is an exciting introduction to the world of modern nursing, and you will begin to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours that will underpin the rest of your career as a healthcare professional. In this clinical immersion module, you will work to the seven pillars of nursing, the NMC Standards of proficiency for registered nurses (2018) and the Code (NMC, 2018).

Within this module you will continue to work across the seven pillars of nursing; patient and public involvement, fundamental essentials of nursing care, evidence for practice; no health without mental health, leadership and management of healthcare, global health and ethics and professionalism.

Further to this you will continue to demonstrate proficiency against the NMC standards of education (https://www.nmc.org.uk/globalassets/sitedocuments/education-standards/future-nurse-proficiencies.pdf)

Syllabus plan

Whilst the module’s precise content may vary from year to year, an example of an overall structure is as follows:

This module is based in the clinical setting and is made up of a series of clinical learning immersions which run in terms 2 and 3. There are two main immersions during which you may experience adult and mental health settings. These clinical immersions are integrated with your theory modules and together they form the first year of your BSc Nursing.

In your clinical immersions you will practice under supervision and in collaboration with nurses, students and healthcare colleagues to develop your nursing skills including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care.

The learning and teaching hours contribute to the NMC and EU Directive requirements of 2,300 practice learning hours across the whole programme. This Clinical Immersion module equates to 592.5 hours, rather than the nominal hours associated with a typical undergraduate 60 credit module.

Re-assessment notes

There is a minimum attendance level to pass this module – please refer to programme handbook.

In the event that a student does not meet the required number of hours – the module will be deemed to have been failed.

To progress to year two, you must demonstrate that you have met the modular learning outcomes by demonstrating the professional values and agreed proficiencies specified in the ePAD, in line with the NMC Standards of proficiency for registered nurses (2018). Furthermore, you must pass the summative ‘Episode of Care’ assessment and the summative ‘Medicines Management’ assessment, as detailed in the ePAD. The final Practice Assessor will confirm that the specified professional values and agreed skills have been achieved and will ensure that relevant proficiencies have been signed. They will also confirm that the summative ‘Episode of Care’ assessment and the summative ‘Medicines Management’ assessment have been completed. Progression is supported and confirmed by the academic assessor for each year of the programme.

The electronic Practice Assessment Document is assessed as either pass or fail. Within the year one clinical immersion, proficiencies can be carried over from one clinical immersion to the next. However, they must be achieved by the end of the year, unless specifically marked in the PAD as being achievable in other Parts.

Demonstrate the ability to consistently provide safe and effective care underpinned by the evidence base in order to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses (2018) and the Code (2018)

You must pass all items of assessment and demonstrate professionalism and fitness to practise in accordance with University of Exeter Policy and Procedures for Fitness to Practise and the Academy of Nursing attendance policy in order to progress to Stage 2.

In all cases re-assessment will be in the same format as the original assessment. Where you have been referred/deferred for any form of assessment detailed above you will have the opportunity to retake within a specified period from the date that feedback was provided. In the case of failure or mitigation in one or more OSCE assessments, you will only be referred or deferred in the relevant station(s).

If you pass re-assessments taken as a result of deferral, your re-assessment will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment and the overall module mark will not be capped.

If you pass re-assessments taken as a result of referral (i.e. following initial failure in the assessment), the assessment(s) will be capped at 40% but the overall module mark will not be capped.

If you fail re-assessments taken as a result of referral (i.e. following initial failure in the assessment), you will be failed in the module and the programme.
