2. Description of the Programme

This MA Creativity: Innovation and Business Strategy programme will offer a curriculum focused on four core modules comprising:

  • Ideas Generation, the Creation Process and Value Chain (Term 1)
  • The Business of Creativity and Value Capture (Term 1)
  • Creative Management of People and Organisations (Term 2)
  • Project Dissertation/Written Dissertation (Term 3)

You will also have the opportunity to take two optional modules (Term 2) (see section 5).

The MA Creativity: Innovation and Business Strategy aims to train and educate the next generation of innovative professionals and executives for the creative industries. You will be taught by leading academics and industry professionals from a range of creative industry backgrounds. We will teach you about the key value chains in headline creative sectors which may include film, television, online entertainment, video gaming, publishing, music industry, etc. You will learn about the impact technology is having on the creative industries and gain insider access to a range of industry tutors who are experts in their specific sectors. You will examine aspects of creativity, innovation and business strategy from a range of perspectives. You will have the opportunity to undertake industry internships as well as the possibility of working with an industry mentor as part of the dissertation if appropriate.

As you might expect from a ground-breaking, postgraduate programme of study, assessment will be more than just essays. Instead you will give presentations, pitch ideas and participate in group game invention and project devising and delivery.

If you are serious about pursuing a career in the creative industries, and want to develop your management and business acumen, this MA will give you the chance to develop the key business skills and networks you will need.

3. Educational Aims of the Programme

The programme’s curriculum combines academic study with practical skills development and acquisition appropriate to a career in creative industries. Specific programme aims are to:

  • Develop an excellent understanding of current critical and practical aspects relating to creative industries in the UK and internationally – which may include film, television, online content, publishing, video gaming, virtual reality, music, arts, drama, etc.
  • Develop your understanding of the various contexts in which creative industries operate and the complex interrelated factors (artistic, commercial, technological, regulatory) that shape them.
  • Develop an advanced knowledge of the value chains for a range of creative industries and facilitate your ability to utilise value chain modelling across the creative industry sectors.
  • Provide you with an appreciation and understanding of key theoretical and practical creative processes when developing concepts, ideas and projects.
  • Hone your understanding of generic business contexts alongside knowledge of particular uses in the creative industries, including the role intellectual property, copyright and regulation plays in the capture of value from creative goods.
  • Provide you with business strategy comprehension, including the skills to present, structure and execute a business plan.
  • Enable you to understand and analyse approaches and models for managing creative organisations and people.
  • Enable you to develop through practice ‘third space’ skills, including cultural competence, adaptability, intellectual curiosity and 360° thinking.
  • Facilitate exposure to organisations and creative sector companies through guest speaker events and work placement activity.
  • Develop your professional and research abilities and your understanding of the relationship between conceptual tools, theoretical frameworks and practical approaches through a variety of approaches and key case studies as demonstrated by expert guest lecturers and/or Exeter’s academic staff.
  • Develop a range of sector specific, academic and transferable skills, including high order conceptual literacy and communication skills of value in career and employment opportunities.

The MA Creativity: Innovation and Business Strategy is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time programme of study at National Qualification Framework (NQF) level 7 (as confirmed against the FHEQ). This programme consists of a single stage. Each stage is normally equivalent to an academic year. 

You may take optional modules as long as any necessary prerequisites have been satisfied, where the timetable allows and if you have not already taken the module in question or an equivalent module.

Subject to approval by the Programme Director, you may take elective modules up to 30 credits outside of the programme as long as any necessary prerequisites have been satisfied, where the timetable allows and if you have not already taken the module in question or an equivalent module.

The core skills and knowledge are delivered through all the modules, and developed in lectures, workshops, exercises, presentations, workshops, symposia, exercises, tutorials, work experience and other learning activities throughout the programme.

The assessment of these skills is through a combination of presentations and participation in seminars, practical exercises, essays, research reports/plans/logbooks and a written or project dissertation.

8. College Support for Students and Students' Learning

All students on the MA Creativity: Innovation and Business Strategy will have a personal tutor for their entire programme of study. Such personal tutors will be available at advertised ‘office hours’ (staff changes can change due to Research Leave, etc.). A personal tutoring system will operate with regular communication throughout the programme. Academic support is also provided by module leaders. You can also make an appointment to see individual teaching staff, and where appropriate, expert guest tutors can act as industry mentors for your Project Dissertation.

11. Regulation of Assessment and Academic Standards

Each academic programme in the University is subject to an agreed College assessment and marking strategy, underpinned by institution-wide assessment procedures.

The security of assessment and academic standards is further supported through the appointment of External Examiners for each programme. External Examiners have access to draft papers, course work and examination scripts. They are required to attend the Board of Examiners and to provide an annual report.
