2. Description of the Programme

Business is being challenged by global economic, societal, environmental and technological disruptions which affect the role of business in our societies and the expectations of aspiring business leaders. The Exeter MBA equips you with the knowledge, the skills and the tools to develop innovative business thinking and new business models that can address those global challenges.

Global in outlook and transformational in nature, the Exeter MBA is your catalyst for ‘leading sustainable change’. Combining an outstanding business and management education, the Exeter MBA helps you transform yourself.  You will acquire new techniques and knowledge, connect to exciting new networks and opportunities and find new routes to profitable growth and positive impact.

The Exeter MBA has 3 main aims:

“Change yourself”

The programme is designed for mid-level professionals and aspiring leaders who wish to identify their aspirations, leverage their strengths, upgrade their knowledge, acquire new skills and an entrepreneurial and analytical mindset to transform themselves and benefit from new opportunities. Participants will start by articulating their values and objectives, and work with their mentor and peers to identify and benefit from new opportunities.

“Ignite change in business”

By gaining a thorough understanding of the ways in which global economic, societal, technological and environmental challenges will impact on business and the workplace, participants will be able to identify new ways of succeeding in an interconnected world through product, process and business model innovation that leverage opportunities brought about by emerging economic models, such as the “sharing economy”, the “circular economy” and the “on-demand” economy.

“Make a Positive Impact”

By helping participants identify new avenues for profitable, yet sustainable growth of their organisation and new business development opportunities, they will become a more effective manager and business leader thriving for positive impact on themselves, their organisation and others.

3. Educational Aims of the Programme

1. To equip participants with the knowledge, understanding, skills and ethical and professional values required to manage and lead change in profitable and sustainable businesses
2. To provide participants with an education in both theory and practice across a wide range of management disciplines
3. To create a stimulating learning environment that will develop participants’ academic and personal development and foster a desire for continued lifelong learning.
4. To provide frameworks and tools to enable participants to relate their business experience to contemporary management ideas and practice and to manage more confidently in a complex and fast-changing environment
5. To embed sustainability throughout the curriculum and enable students to understand the importance and value of responsible stewardship of financial, social and natural capital.
6. To develop the skills and mindset required to be a responsible and effective leader in business: planet-minded, reflective, analytical, collaborative, worldly, action-oriented and ethical.
7. To enable participants to engage in a range of practical challenges and experiential learning to develop their capability for applied research, consultancy interventions, leading self, leading others and leading change.
8. To provide a strategic perspective to sustainability to encourage students to foster innovation, value creation and collaborative advantage when managing businesses
9. To encourage participants to take a global perspective to business. Cohort diversity, cases, field trips, assignments and challenges, guest speakers and projects will provide opportunities for students to interact with peers, businesses and situations across the world to extend their horizon and also their ability to empathise with different cultures

The MBA is a career development management programme for those with post-graduate and relevant experience on which the learning process is designed to build. The main emphasis is on developing the ability to lead (self, others and change) through strategic management, with a strong practical orientation to the curriculum. The Exeter MBA goes further and emphasises the necessity for innovative, responsible and transformative leadership in a rapidly changing global financial, environmental, social and technological context.

4. Programme Structure

The full-time MBA is a one year programme.  The programme consists of 17 taught modules (5 and 10 credits each) plus a project (20 credits) giving a total of 180 credits.

The programme has a number of stages:

Induction:          You will take part in a MBA induction focused on preparing you for the year.  You will be introduced to the academic requirements of the programme, take part in workshops designed to equip you with study skills, build relationships with your colleagues and begin the process of acclimatizing for MBA studies.

Sept to Dec:     In Term 1 you will acquire a thorough grounding in core business functions through a number of core modules.  Each module will be taught over 4 or 5 intensive days.  One of these modules – Personal Transformations – will be extended into Terms 2 & 3 as an underpinning framework to equip you with executive and professional skills you will require in order to redirect your career and/or develop into more senior leadership roles.   The coursework for some modules may extend over the Christmas period, with deadlines in January/February. The programme has been developed to allow participants free periods where there are no formal lectures, whereby participants can reflect, read and undertake assignment preparation.

Jan – June:     You will study

  • a number of further core integrating modules
  • two electives in order to acquire further knowledge and skills in areas of personal, or professional interests.

Terms 1 and 2 also include a number of additional activities, such as workshops to prepare you for the MBA corporate challenge, your MBA project and our guest speaker series.

June to Sept:    The Summer period is between June and September. In this part of the programme you will undertake a major Consultancy Project. For many students this is the highlight of their year as it provides an opportunity to specialise and gain practical consultancy experience in readiness to the return to work.

In addition to the core and elective modules, further activities are arranged to facilitate induction at the start of the course and also integrate student learning and promote leadership in practice at the end of the programme.  Further details are provided after the module descriptors:

1.Consultancy Skills Workshops: MBAM914 compulsory workshops are organised in terms 1 and 2 to help you prepare for your MBA project.  These workshops include the negotiation and formulation of your consultancy brief and proposal to your client, making critical literature reviews, research methodology and design, data collection, data analysis and interpretation.

 2.  Design Challenge 2 day workshop: IDEO will be running a workshop on their Circular Economy Design Toolkit for MBA students at Cranfield University. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with the world leaders in design thinking and will form one of the cornerstones for the Corporate Challenge in Term 2.

3Start-Up Weekend:  Start-Up Weekend is a global innovation and entrepreneur event with over 15k entrepreneurs in over 200 cities participating. The full time cohort will be attending Start-Up Weekend as part of their preparation for the corporate challenge. Admission fees will be covered by the Exeter MBA Programme.

4.     MBA Alumni Conference: The programme organises a conference for MBA alumni and current students and features a Keynote speaker, alumni guest speakers and panel discussion.

5. Alumni and Recruiters Events: A reception for the companies and alumni who have supported the programme with an opportunity for participants to showcase the value of their Exeter MBA programme and to network with organisations and alumni.

6. Project Pitching Evenings:  In term 2 a number of project pitching evenings will be organised, we will be joined by some of our corporate partners local innovative and start-up companies, and charities who will present the consultancy projects on offer.

5. Programme Modules

The following tables describe the programme and constituent modules. Constituent modules may be updated, deleted or replaced as a consequence of the annual programme review of this programme.

The programme consists of 17 taught modules (15 core, 2 electives) plus your MBA Project.

The programme is intensive and includes formal lectures, seminars, group work and individual assignments.

Lectures and classroom-based teaching is complemented with study trips, corporate challenges, assignments, guest speakers and extra-curricular activities such as our Guest Speaker programme which takes place throughout the year to complement your learning and provide opportunities for you to further build your skills, knowledge and understanding.

Note: Core and elective modules may be updated, deleted or replaced due to programme development. Elective modules may be taken only if the necessary pre-requisite core modules have been completed, if the timetable allows and if the module, or an equivalent module has not been previously taken.

The programmes consist of 180 credits, divided into modules weighted at either 5, 10 or 20 credits.

The following table describes the programmes as planned for delivery at the time of this specification. Constituent modules may be updated, deleted or replaced in future years as a consequence of normal programme development. Details at any time will be available from the Business School website.

Elective modules may be taken only if the necessary prerequisites have been satisfied, if the timetable allows and if the module or an equivalent module has not been previously taken.

Module and Credits

It should be noted that the credit value of each module is either 5,10 or 20 and this diverges from the University’s 15/30 credit structure. This divergence is permissible given that the MBA is distinctive from other programmes and self-contained, and has specific entry and accreditation requirements. The MBA modules will not be open to students from other University programmes and MBA students will not take modules outside of their own programme.

Each module stipulates an expected number of contact hours and study hours. For a 10-credit module the normal contact hours (face-to-face working with faculty) is 28, supported by 72 hours of private study by the student. The private study consists of preparatory reading prior to the module as well as reading during and after the module to support case preparation or the completion of assignments (72 hours).

Where a module involves a four-day intensive study block, sessions run from 9am to 5pm (with breaks) and students are also expected to read and undertake preparatory work during the module evenings.

The Business School will endeavour to offer all of the electives listed but these modules may change (1) if developments in the business environment justify the amendment or replacement of modules and (2) in the event of insufficient student demand for particular electives. It is possible that in some circumstances (e.g. timetabling restrictions, staff availability or to improve the spacing of modules) it may be necessary to pair two elective module choices against each other at the same time. We will avoid this wherever possible to maximise student choice. The Business School also reserves the right to modify the content and reading material in module descriptors in order to ensure modules remain up-to-date.
