2. Description of the Programme

Business is increasingly challenged by global economic, societal, environmental and technological disruptions which affect its  role in our societies and results in the need to develop leaders able to navigate this complex landscape.  The Exeter MBA equips you with the knowledge, skills and critical thinking tools to ask questions, challenge assumptions and develop regenerative business models that address those global challenges.

The Exeter MBA has 3 main aims:

“Change yourself”

The programme is designed for mid-level professionals and aspiring leaders who wish to transform themselves and their careers. The focus is on increased self awareness through an active reflection process in order to identify  personal aspirations, strengths  and a sense of purpose. This full time programme offers the opportunity to upgrade your knowledge, acquire new skills and develop an entrepreneurial and analytical mindset.  Participants will start by articulating their personal values and career objectives, and work with a series of mentors, faculty and  peers to identify and benefit from new insights and emerging opportunities.

“Ignite change in business”

By gaining a thorough understanding of the ways in which global economic, societal, technological and environmental challenges will impact on business and the workplace, participants will be able to identify new ways of succeeding in an interconnected world. This will be achieved through exploring product, process and business model innovation that leverage opportunities brought about by emerging economic models, such as the “sharing economy”, the “circular economy” and the “on-demand” economy.

By helping participants identify new avenues for profitable and ethical growth they will become a more effective manager able to innovate and adapt in responsible and sustainable ways. We offer rigorous management education throughout the programme and work with diverse and numerous corporate partners to ensure its relevance in solving some of the most pressing problems of our time. 

3. Educational Aims of the Programme

1. To equip participants with the knowledge, understanding, skills and ethical values required to manage and lead change in an economically viable and responsible manner.
2. To provide participants with an education in both theory and practice across a wide range of management disciplines.
3. To create a stimulating learning environment that will progress participants’ academic and personal development and foster a desire for continued lifelong learning.
4. To provide frameworks and tools to enable participants to relate their business experience to contemporary management ideas and practice and to manage more confidently in a complex and fast-changing environment.
5. To embed sustainability throughout the curriculum and enable students to understand the importance and value of responsible stewardship of financial, social and natural capital.
6. To develop the skills and mindset required to be a responsible and effective leader in business: planet-minded, reflective, analytical, collaborative, creative, worldly, action-oriented and ethical.
7. To enable participants to engage in a range of practical challenges and experiential learning to develop their capability for applied research, consultancy interventions, leading self, leading others and leading change.
8. To provide a strategic perspective to sustainability to encourage students to foster innovation, value creation and collaborative advantage when managing businesses.
9. To encourage participants to take a global perspective to business. Cohort diversity, cases, field trips, assignments and challenges, guest speakers and projects will provide opportunities for students to interact with peers, businesses and situations across the world to extend their horizon and also their ability to empathise with different cultures.

The MBA is a leadership programme designed to build upon the managerial experience of our student cohort. The main emphasis is on developing the ability to lead (self, others and change) through strategic management, with a strong ethical and practical orientation to the curriculum. The Exeter MBA goes further and emphasises the necessity for innovative, responsible to the economic, environmental, social and technological changes facing business.

4. Programme Structure

The programmes consist of 180 credits, divided into modules weighted at either 10, 15, 20 or 30 credits. The Exeter MBA has a fixed core programme, taught in the Autumn and Spring Terms.  In the Summer term students complete 2 elective modules and a undertake a major individual consultancy project or dissertation.

Understanding our World

MBA graduates need a set of professional skills to make them effective in understanding the situation in which they work.  This segment helps you to build these.  You will study the basics of data analysis, accounting, finance and economics, all fields that we believe are fundamental to MBA education and the rigorous operation of successful and responsible business.  This is assessed with a combination of exams and written assignments. 

Topics covered:  Accounting and Finance, Economics, Data and Analytics.

Designing a Better Future for All

We recognise the importance of tackling global challenges in all our futures, this is a core value and goal of the Exeter MBA.  In this segment you will study the systemic nature of complex global challenges in order to understand the context within which strategic decisions sit. Working with academic staff from our Centre for Circular Economy, and partners such as design agency IDEO, you will explore the value of design thinking and its approach to solving problems in a creative and regenerative manner.  It is assessed with written essay assignments and a group design thinking exercise working with, and on behalf of, an external organisation.

Topics covered:  Tackling Global Challenges, The Circular Economy Design Challenge.

Leading with Purpose  

Delivered by academic staff from The Exeter Centre for Leadership, this segment teaches you how effective leaders behave.  You will be encouraged to understand your own leadership behaviour, to study the management of change, and learn skills in negotiation.  This is assessed through a reflective portfolio and written essay assignments.

Topics covered:  Leadership, Organisational Behaviour, Corporate Governance: Responsibility, Risk and Reputation.

Achieving Enduring Success

This segment teaches you about the practical marketing, operational management and strategic decision making tools that effective managers use to track performance and drive success, however this is defined.  These strategic approaches underlie successful leadership in large and small organisations and are fundamental to a rigorous MBA education.  

It is assessed with a case study exercise, marketing simulation and written essay assignments.

Topics covered:  Marketing, Operations Management, Strategy.

Creating the New

Themes of Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship are central to the Exeter MBA and are developed in this segment of the programme.  Academic staff from our Centre for Entrepreneurship and Digital Economy (INDEX) will introduce you to current thinking and creative approaches to identifying and realising new ideas.  It is assessed with written assignments and a research project on behalf of an external organisation.

Topics covered: Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Digital Technology.

The full-time MBA is a one year programme.  The programme consists of 5 thematic units which include 12 taught modules (10 or 20 credits each), 2 electives (15 credits each) plus a project (20 credits)  giving a total of 180 credits. 

The programme has a number of stages:

Induction:

You will take part in a MBA induction focused on preparing you for the year.  You will be introduced to academic requirements of the programme, take part in online workshops designed to equip you with study skills, build relationships with your colleagues, and begin the process of acclimatizing for the critical thinking and collaboration requirements of your MBA studies.

The academic year:    

In Term 1 you will acquire a thorough grounding in essential business functions through a number of  modules, in Term 2 you continue to acquire new knowledge and are expected to increase your focus on personal development. As we move in to Term 3 you will bring together knowledge with personal development in order to add value and create impact in applied consulting projects.                      

Each module is typically taught weekly within one term, with some block taught over 4 or 5 days.  One of these modules –  Leading with Purpose, which covers leadership and corporate governance, sits alongside the entire programme and extends across three academic terms. The programme has been developed to allow a mix of asynchronous and synchronous activities to enable faculty support, academic mentorship and self-directed learning.

Programme enhancement:

In addition to the core and elective modules, further activities are arranged each year to integrate collaborative projects, networking, action learning, corporate engagement and personal development.  Further details are provided in this document following the module descriptors:

  1. Career Transformations: The MBA benefits from a dedicated employability and career consultant who works alongside you to develop and put in to action a personal development plan. Running throughout the programme (and afterwards as an alumnus) we focus on helping you to get the most from the MBA. In addition to workshops, coaching sessions, small group action learning and mentoring, you are supported in answering questions that lead to personal growth.
  2. MBA Leading Edge Speaker Series: A wide range of open talks are organised each year, bringing authors, leaders, entrepreneurs, campaigners and other thought leaders to share their insights with the MBA students and their guests.
  3. Local Community Impact Challenge: A series of not for profit partners from across Devon engage with the MBA cohort each year to ask for their help in solving problems. Whilst giving the organisations much needed support it also offers the opportunity to work in multi-national teams on a meaningful social or environmental project of your choice.
  4. Design Sprint: IDEO will be running a workshop on their Circular Economy Design Toolkit for MBA students. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with the world leaders in design thinking and will form one of the cornerstones for the Design Challenge.
  5. Circular Economy Primer is a six week online course providing a foundational understanding of the principles of a Circular Economy and multiple examples of the theory being applied in practise. A certificate of completion will be awarded when you have met the course criteria.
  6. MBA Alumni Conference: The programme organises a virtual conference each year for MBA alumni and current students and features a Keynote speaker, alumni guest speakers and panel discussion.
  7. Alumni and Recruiters Events: We often hold London based receptions for the organisations and alumni who have supported the MBA programme with an opportunity for participants to showcase the value of their Exeter MBA programme whilst networking with potential employers.
  8. Consultancy Skills Workshops: Compulsory workshops are organised to help you to prepare for your MBA consulting project.  These workshops include the negotiation and formulation of your consultancy brief, managing your client’s expectations, making critical literature reviews, research methodology and design, data collection, data analysis and interpretation.
  9. Leadership Insights: Each year we enjoy alternate learning spaces, where we can engage with a series of guests who share their stories around our chosen leadership theme.

The culmination of your programme is your MBA Project which provides an opportunity to develop and apply innovative business thinking to solve the real-life challenge faced by one of our corporate partner organisations, and develop new regenerative business models in a fast emerging world.

Your MBA project may focus on an issue of relevance to the programme. The Exeter MBA is all about enabling you to develop into senior management roles by helping you contribute innovation and ignite, lead and manage change in a wide range of organisations, such as multi-national organisations, SMEsNGOs, international organisations and social enterprises

An MBA with Distinction is awarded if a student gains a final credit-weighted mean greater than or equal to 69.50%, or a final weighted mark greater than or equal to 68.00% and modules to the value of at least

50% with a module mark greater than or equal to 69.50%. An MBA with Merit is awarded if a student gains a final weighted mark greater than or equal to 59.50%, or a final weighted mark greater than or equal to 58.00% and modules to the value of at least 50% with a module mark greater than or equal to 59.50%. If a student fails to achieve the necessary credits for an MBA, a Postgraduate Diploma can be awarded if at least 120 credits are gained, or a Postgraduate Certificate can be awarded if at least 60 credits are gained.
