Things to consider

Here you'll find key information to help you research and decide which accommodation to apply for. Things to consider include a catered or self-catered residence, ensuite, standard or studio as the room type, the locations and costs of our accommodation. We also have helpful  Undergraduate and Postgraduate tables to compare accommodation details, including rent prices, bed sizes, ratios of applications to residence, walking distances and contract lengths.

Catering

In self-catered accommodation, shared kitchens are fully equipped with a hob, grill, oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, water boiler/kettle, dining table and chairs, and an ironing board. 

Studio kitchens have a microwave or combi-oven, hob, fridge with freezer compartment, water boiler or kettle. Our studios at Birks Grange Village and Lafrowda also have a dining table and chairs.

Want a break from cooking? Eat in catered accommodation with a Meal Package Card, which enables you to enjoy 7 meals at Holland Hall, Birks Grange and Lopes Hall for a fixed price.

In catered accommodation, your rent includes 16 meals per week throughout term time - breakfast and dinner 7 days a week, plus brunch on the weekends. You also have a mini fridge in your room and access to a utility area which has a sink, microwave, and worktops so you can prepare lunch or light snacks.  

We offer an excellent variety of dishes, including a vegetarian choice at every service and at least one vegan option every dinner. We also do themed nights, dedicating one night a week to cuisine from a specific country around the world. Have a look at our sample catered menus here.

Room Type 

We offer three main room types: 

  • Standard rooms have bathroom facilities which are shared with other residents, but most bedrooms have a sink. Standard rooms in townhouses and our newer built residences do not have sinks because bathrooms are only shared between two. 
  • En-suite rooms have an adjoined shower, sink and toilet for your own use. 
  • Studio rooms have a kitchenette, open-plan living space/workspace and en-suite bathroom.
  • We also have a small number of self-contained flats suitable for couples that include a separate bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and lounge or study area. Dining facilities vary between flats and are in the lounge or kitchen area. 

Location 

  • You could live on Streatham campus, as all our catered residences and 86% of our self-catered accommodation are on this campus. 
  • ‘Off campus’ accommodation is in or close to the city centre or St David’s train station.  
  • ‘Near St. Luke’s’ refers to accommodation close to St. Luke’s campus. Those studying Education, Sport and Health Sciences and students at the Exeter Medical School are based at St Luke’s so may prefer to apply for accommodation close to this campus.

Contract Length 

Contract lengths vary across our accommodation. We offer 32-week contracts for all our catered residences while contracts for self-catered accommodation range from 40 to 48 weeks for undergraduates and 40 to 51 weeks for postgraduates.
