Ethnic minority people, when compared to White British people, are more likely to report adverse, harsh or distressing mental health experiences and poorer outcomes. Frequently professionals report personal anxiety when discussing racism with patients and often avoid raising the subject. When unaddressed this collective discomfort and awkwardness unwittingly contributes to the ongoing social injustices, oppression and distress of others. Becoming more comfortable with the uncomfortable and engaging in ‘courageous conversations’ helps reduce personal awkwardness and unwitting discrimination. Dean Harvey will share his expertise and insights gained from personal experience in recognising and acknowledging racial trauma.
