First ESI Think Tank held on “The Anatomy of Adaptation”

It was led by Prof Gabriel Yvon-Durocher, with stimulating and diverse talks from Prof Nina Wedell, Prof Angus Buckling, Dr Tom Currie, Dr Tomas Chaigneau and Prof Tim Lenton. The talks inspired discussion groups in the second half of the event to look for common threads between the study of adaptation in biological, social and technological systems.

This was the first in what will be a series of ESI Think Tanks that will take the form of bi-monthly workshops to explore a particular “concept” with the aim of developing a perspectives paper or defining opportunities to pursue the concept further. These concepts will deliver crosscutting, theoretical syntheses that can bring together the diverse disciplines across the university to tackle big questions in environmental and sustainability science.

A blog on the event will soon be uploaded onto the ESI’s website and the next Think Tank will be held at the end of January 2018 (date to be confirmed) entitled “Inspired by Nature” exploring biomimicry in all its forms, and how this approach can be used to look for sustainable biological, technological, social and economic solutions to environmental change.
