Module description

This 1st year module forms part of the Modern Languages Work Abroad programme. This non-credit bearing module provides you with both the opportunity and support to develop the employability and personal development skills needed to explore career opportunities and source and apply for a professional placement.

Delivery is through a combination of lectures and workshops, predominantly in term 2. Completion of all sessions is strongly advised.

Module aims - intentions of the module

This is a non-credit bearing module that aims to prepare you for undertaking work abroad for your International Placement in your third year. This module will seek to prepare you for the tasks and activities related to finding and securing a suitable placement for the third year of your degree.

The combination of lectures and workshops focus on career exploration, self-awareness of personal strengths, searching and applying for placements, and creating an effective CV.

  • 5. Appraise the purpose and benefits of undertaking a work abroad placement
  • 6. Locate appropriate services and resources to help with career planning and placement search.
  • 7. Research, apply and compete for jobs/roles
  • 8. Develop work-based skills e.g. team working, communication, organisation, resilience, commercial awareness, IT etc.

Syllabus plan

It is envisaged that the syllabus is likely to include the following topics although precise content and order may vary.

  • Introduction to Working Abroad and the benefits of placements.
  • Self-Reflection – Understand your skills/strengths and how that could influence the placement you undertake or organisations you apply to.
  • Research – Developing your research skills for placements.
  • Creating your CV.
  • Placement Search.
  • LinkedIn.

 

Attendance at all lectures and workshops is strongly recommended to maximise your chances of securing a placement.
