Global Leaders Experience: Taa Marbouta Tunisia 2024

The Global Leaders Experience will be partnering with Taa Marbouta to deliver an exciting new programme in Tunisia, from the 11th – 20th April 2024.

This programme will offer you the opportunity to interact with academics, activists, policymakers, migrants, and others in trying to propose innovative and sustainable solutions to the global migration crisis, whether through policy papers or other initiatives

About the programme

Centred on the theme of migration, this Global Leaders Experience provides a unique insight into social action and international relations, guided by those working in communities and authorities in Tunisia. Tunisia is at the forefront of the global migration crisis, as a transit country for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa traveling to Europe, a country of departure for Tunisians, and a destination for some west Africans and Libyans as well.

Activities during the visit will include meeting with organizations working on migration, activists and migrant representatives, local authorities, and working with academics and students local to Tunisia.

The program will be running from the 11th-20th of April, the 11th and the 20th being travel days from and to the UK.

  • 12th April - Induction and meeting with one of the stakeholders (probably from the United Nations) in Tunis in the afternoon.
  • 13th April - The group will have a roundtable discussion on migration, most likely including students from the University of Tunis-Carthage. In the afternoon, the group will attend a lecture and discussion with Dr. Wael Garnaoui, an anthropologist from the University of Sousse.
  • 14th April - The group will be traveling to Zarzis in the south of Tunisia where they will spend a day and a half meeting with relevant actors in the region (local NGOs, families of irregular migrants, local authorities).
  • 16th April - Students will travel halfway back to Tunis and stop in the city of Sfax to spend one night and meet with stakeholders including the sub-Saharan community, local NGOs, and international NGOs.
  • 17th April - Students will go back to Tunis and get some free time to reflect on their trip. For the remaining couple of days, the group will be having 2 to 3 activities a day, including presentations on their experience and work over the programme.

A full itinerary will be circulated to participants prior to the programme. We will be confirming more information on the programme schedule and content soon; please contact global-leaders@exeter.ac.uk if you have any questions and we’d be happy to help.
