Event details

Dear Colleagues,
We’d like to invite you to the next online Monday Majlis of the Centre for the Study of Islam, Exeter:
Monday the 30th of January, 17:00-18:30 (UK time)
Massimo Ramaioli, Salafism: The Vanguard of the Islamic World?

Registration is required. Register please on this link:
Abstract: Salafism has emerged as one of the most prominent movements in the contemporary Islamic world. Yet, it is not just a mere attempt to bring back the cherished community of the early days of Islam. Instead, Salafism represents an instance of vanguardism - where a group claims access to truth, and sets out to steer history accordingly. In this sense, Salafism stands for a modern, dare we say radical, understanding of politics.

Bio: Massimo Ramaioli is Assistant Professor and Coordinator in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco. Previously, he was Assistant Dean, School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Habib University (HU) in Karachi, Pakistan.
He holds a PhD in Political Science from Syracuse University. His main research interests are contentious politics, political Islam, Gramscian theory and International Relations theory.
He is also a regular contributor for Nuovo Mondo Economico, an online publication of the Centro Studi Einaudi of Turin, Italy, and a research fellow at the German Institute of Global Area Studies of Hamburg, Germany.

In the spirit of the label ‘Majlis’ and also to make the talks even more interesting, we are experimenting with a new format presenting the topic discussed by our speaker as embedded in their own research journey. Please come and enjoy the talks and the discussions. If you’d like to be included in the CSI (Centre for the Study of Islam (Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter) mailing list, please contact the CSI Manager: Sarah Wood (
We’ll be happy to welcome you!
