Digital Humanities Workshop: Wikipedia Editing for Researchers and Educators (online session)

Sign up required. Introductory training on writing and editing Wikipedia articles.

Event details

Please sign up via Eventbrite. The session will be hosted in Microsoft Teams, details to follow by email.

This online training for absolute beginners will provide an introductory guide to Wikipedia, the origin and development of the platform, and how to use Wikipedia to edit and create articles for research and educational projects.

The aim of the session is to empower staff and students to effectively write Wikipedia articles, whilst making our research, collections and specialist knowledge accessible for public engagement in a professional way. There will be an opportunity to make additions to existing Wikipedia articles and to create new articles.

The Digital Humanities Lab particularly encourage participants to contribute to Wikiprojects that celebrate our Special Collections, for example the ‘Women in Red’, and an online resource created by volunteers at http://hypatia.exeter.ac.uk/exhibits.

Support will be provided around the following:

  • How to get started with wikis and Wikipedia;
  • Creating a new article;
  • Notability criteria for biographical articles and the collaborative editing process;
  • Uploading content and adding references;
  • Edit and ask questions of the trainer live as you interact with the editor and articles.

University of Exeter staff and students are welcome to book a place. Please sign up for the session in advance and you will receive a confirmation of your place and a link to join us in Microsoft Teams. The Lab will provide a detailed guide for independent editing.

If you don’t have one already, you may wish to create a Wikipedia account ahead of the event.
