Ethical Issues in Teaching Intercultural Citizenship in Foreign Language Education
Building on the idea that language teaching has an educational as well as instrumental purpose, and that language teaching can/should help learners to relate their learning to the here and now and the society in which they live, a number of projects in recent years have put into practice the notion of ‘intercultural citizenship’. This raises ethical questions for teachers, since they encourage/expect their learners to take ‘action in the community’. It is these questions which will be the focus of my talk: what they are and how they might be addressed.
