Professor Jonathan Glazzard (University of Hull)
Correcting Current Injustices: Challenges, Reimagining and Building a Better Future for Young People with Special Educational Needs, Disabilities and Mental ill-health
The lecture explores the current challenges in the education sector in relation to children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including those with mental ill-health. It will chart some of the historical developments in the field and identify the particular challenges that are currently being experienced by schools, colleges and universities. I will argue that the emphasis on individualised approaches, which locate the problems squarely within individuals, are insufficient because they do not target the underlying causes, but instead seek to address the symptoms. I will emphasise the need for a systemic approach which addresses the risk factors that are prevalent within schools, families, communities and policy. I wil argue that greater attention needs to be given to educational and life transitions and that a political response is required to advance educational inclusion.
Professor Jonathan Glazzard is the Rosalind Hollis Professor of Education for Social Justice in the School of Education at the University of Hull. Jonathan's research focuses on the experiences of minoritized individuals and groups. Jonathan sits on the Editorial Boards of several journals including the International Journal of Educational and Life Transitions and Equity in Education and Society. He is a co-convenor of the British Educational Research Association Special Interest Group, Mental Health and Wellbeing in Education. His current research focuses on the experiences of LGBTQ+, disabled youth. Recent publications have focused on mental health, educational and life transitions and early reading development in children. Jonathan holds Visiting Professorships at BGU, Lincoln, Newman University, Birmingham and the University of Northampton.
