Film - Gilane

Iranian Film Festival

Event details

As ever, Iran is in the news and, for the most part, not in a good way.

As gloom, doom, sanctions and war loom, it seems timely to remind ourselves of another Iran, of creativity, beauty, intelligence, comedy (and also tragedy) - an Iran that reflects upon itself and in doing so, reveals more of itself than will ever be understood from TV reports and press releases.

Iranian movies are one good way, perhaps the best way to do this - Iranian cinema has been successful in winning  a remarkable spread of  the best international awards in major film festivals over recent decades.

The latest one to be acclaimed in this way is Asghar Farhadi’s ‘Separation’ which has been nominated for best foreign language film in the Oscars and has won a Golden Globe, among many other prizes.

A handful of world class directors have tried through their films to show the realities of Iran in these days.

The Centre for Persian and Iranian Studies (CPIS) is happy to run an Iranian film festival in the institute of Arab and Islamic studies (IAIS), showing some of these great films.

Please find attached a timetable of the films have been chosen to show. They are 8 films from 8 Iranian prominent directors.
