About the event
Renewable energy sources such as wave, tide and offshore wind provide clean, green and locally available energy to coastal and island areas.
Whilst these energy sources are popular (at least in terms of results from opinion polls), few instances of real-world projects exist even if some offshore wind farms are beginning to emerge around the UK coast.
For wave and tidal energy, the technologies to harness them are still in development and they are relatively expensive. They therefore present a challenge for public engagement – what is the best way to make familiar and meaningful what are as yet largely unknown and unfamiliar technologies?
This event builds on a research project funded by ESRC and the Guernsey Government that has developed new methods of public engagement that render unfamiliar technologies – and their local impacts - more familiar to publics through the use of photography and mapping.
