Engaged and Resilient Communities: Exploring Community Participation in Environmental Initiatives

This workshop aims to bring together members of the public, community practitioners, policy makers and researchers to share knowledge and understanding of the issues around environmental initiatives.

Event details

Why and how do people get involved in place-based environmental initiatives? How can participation towards greater resilience to a changing natural environment be sustained?

Key note speaker: David Gray, Chief Executive of The River Stewardship Company, Sheffield, will speak on the ways in which community involvement with rivers in large cities in the North West has been promoted.

This workshop aims to bring together members of the public, community practitioners, policy makers and researchers to share knowledge and understanding of these issues by:

  • Enabling a wide range of stakeholders to share their experiences of communities working on environmental initiatives;
  • Building a regional community of practice for sharing knowledge, practice and success in sustaining participation in environmental initiatives;
  • Developing ways for linking research and practice for collaborative funding opportunities.

The workshop will be an inter-active event, where attendees will be encouraged to bring their own experiences and challenges to share and discuss. Facilitated by researchers from the University of Exeter and University of the West of England, it will include a showcase of community resilience research by the University of Exeter in collaboration with members of the community in Crediton, Devon.

Attendance is free and will include a buffet lunch at Reed Hall.

Places are limited to 40 people and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

To book your place and for event information, please e-mail Johanna Korndorfer (J.Korndorfer@exeter.ac.uk) by the 23rd of June.
