Miriam Darlington - 'Otter Country: In Search of the Wild Otter '

An event to celebrate the publication by Granta of current PhD student Miriam Darlingon's book

The Department of English and the Centre for South West Writing are very pleased to celebrate the publication by Granta of current PhD student Miriam Darlingtons book, 'Otter Country'.

Event details

Miriam Darlington is described as a prominent voice in the new generation of British nature writers. The book 'Otter Country' follows Darlington's search through different landscapes, seasons, weather and light, as she tracks one of Britain's most elusive animals. During her journey, she meets otter experts, representatives of the Environment Agency, conservationists, ecologists, walkers, Henry Williamson's family, Gavin Maxwell's heir; zoo keepers, fishermen, scientists, hunters and poets. Above all she learns how to track and be around otters, and that the stillness required to actually see this shy animal can bring many unasked-for wonders.

Miriam Darlington will give readings from her book and copies are available from Blackwells. Wine will be served during the evening. Admission to this event is free.

The book was Granta’s lead title for the autumn and has already earned some truly impressive review coverage:

“Real love comes with knowledge, and the search for knowledge shapes this wonderful book ... It is a risky task to write a book standing on the shoulders of two of nature writing's greatest exponents. But Darlington has earned her place alongside Maxwell and Williamson.”  The Guardian

“Every bit as captivating as its subject, this is a book that, in the best way, leaves you longing for more.” The Daily Telegraph

“If a better nature book is published this year, I would be surprised.”  Jim Perrin.
