Export Control - half/one day course

A half/one day course on Export Control, delivered by guest speaker Richard Tauwhare.

The morning session will provide a general introduction suited to a broader audience including senior staff.

Event details

Followed after lunch by more in depth information for those who may be involved in the licensing process.

UK Export Controls restrict the export of goods or technology, with the aim of preventing proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and countering terrorism.

The main areas of concern are goods and technologies with potential military or ‘dual-use’ or security applications. These can be found in a range of disciplines including nuclear physics, biological sciences, chemistry, mechanical engineering, electronics, computing and aerospace.

The transfer is not always in physical ‘goods’ but can also be the transfer of software, data, technology or ‘know how’ by any means (including by email and telephone) to a destination outside the UK.

Academics, research and professional services staff should take into consideration the possibility that technology may be exported and whether there are any concerns about the recipient of that technology, including current sanctions which might be applicable.

Export Controls should be considered as early as possible when considering undertaking a research activity and recruiting students who may require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate.

If an export falls within the Controls, a licence will be required before any transfer can be made. Failure to obtain an appropriate licence to export controlled goods is a criminal offence. There is no automatic exemption for academics and researchers.
