Development Fund 2022/23: Exploring creativity as a tool for improving wellbeing of students and host providers in Hospiscare

Dr Caitlin Kight (School of Education, HASS) - Exploring creativity as a tool for improving wellbeing of students and host providers in Hospiscare

Overview

Inspired by growing evidence that creative approaches can enhance wellbeing in both education and healthcare contexts, this project explores the power of art to support students and their host providers during nursing placements. Working collaboratively with students and providers at Hospiscare, Dr Caitlin Kight and her team will co-create artistic interventions to tackle focal issues that commonly arise during placements – e.g., low mood, anxiety, struggles to develop professional identity, poor communication. They will then assess the efficacy of the interventions in tackling these challenges, and collectively explore ways of scaling this intervention in both HE and medical contexts. Together, they will design both a ‘creative toolkit’ that students and staff can use to support their wellbeing, as well as a curriculum allowing us to introduce this toolkit to further audiences in the future.

This project is building upon an innovative new third year module in the Medical School, 'The Art and History of Nursing', and the recent exhibition hosted by Arts & Culture. Learn more here.
