This initiative explores the histories of whiteness across the world. A workshop will be held in Summer 2023, co-organised with Manuela Boatcă and Zoltán Ginelli.
Workshop Overview
The Societies and Cultures Institute, together with Global Partnerships Fund, supported an international workshop ‘Whiteness Beyond the West’ in June 2023. It brought together scholars from institutions in Argentina, Brazil, the United States, Germany, Turkey, South Africa, Israel and the United Kingdom. Against the backdrop of the return of the politics of white supremacy to the public sphere, participants explored histories of whiteness across the world through the lenses of e.g. politics, migration, museums, medicine, surveillance and popular culture - and considered their relevance today.
