Part-time work during your studies

Many international students and UK students work part-time. For international students, it is a brilliant way to practice your English and learn more about UK culture.

What type of part-time jobs are available in the UK?

Part-time work for students is usually in shops, cafes, restaurants, hotels and offices. Most part-time roles don’t require much (or any) experience.

How to find part-time work

You can find casual part-time work on Handshake

You can also use general job sites such as Find a Job or Indeed (put “part time” and “Exeter” into the search box).

Many students take copies of a CV and visit local shops and businesses to ask about available jobs. A CV for a part-time job will need to look a bit different than a CV for a graduate / professional job though. This is because you will need to focus on the skills for part-time work, such as customer service, team working and communication skills more than your academic achievements.

We also run a part-time / casual jobs fair twice a year.

Part-time Exeter internships (Student Campus Partnerships and Student Business Partnerships)

These internships are designed to fit around your studies. To receive a weekly update on our internships, sign up to our bulletin email.

Part-time work and your visa

Make sure you know how your Student visa affects the part-time work you can do. The International Student Support team provide information about the hours you can work during term time and vacations on their webpage. If you have any questions about visas and part-time work, contact the team before you start work.
