Module description
In this module you will develop your translation and research skills in specialist areas of professional translation, learn about the specific systems from which they derive and how to find parallels in target culture systems. You will develop expertise in using the tools and resources necessary to specialise in a particular field of professional translation.

The module aims to provide you with a thorough introduction to specialised translation, including the systems which produce them and the specific terminology they employ, as well as the tools and resources for effective specialist translation in a range of domains.

- Comparison of systems related to the specialist field
- Terminology and genre-specific structures of specialist translation
- Strategies for and tools of specialist translation
- Critical issues in translating specialised texts
- Professional aspects of specialist translation

Re-assessment notes
Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.
Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 50%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of referral will be capped at 50%.

Basic reading:
- Materials to be provided by the tutor and drawn from a variety of on-line and paper-based sources from the subject domain.
- A familiarity with the texts prescribed in the module SMLM150 Translation Theory is presupposed.
