Module description
Mandarin Chinese Advanced One is intended for those who have successfully completed FLM 2330 Mandarin Chinese Intermediate Two or who have a level broadly of A level (Grade A*-B) or equivalent. The module develops all four core language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as advanced grammatical structures of Chinese, in a communicative context. The module is taught as far as possible in Chinese.

Module aims - intentions of the module
The module is appropriate for those who have an A-level (Grade A-B) in the foreign language or equivalent or B1 of the Common European Framework for languages - CEFR. The module develops all four core language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as advanced grammatical structures of the target language. This course is between solid B1 - B2 (Exit level) - Independent User of the Common European Framework for languages, and aims to:
- Review and consolidate the advanced structures and simplified form characters of the target language, developing both vocabulary and range of language structures thus equipping you with the linguistic tools to enable you to communicate effectively in everyday and academic situations
- Further develop and embed active and passive language skills, including comprehension skills in listening and reading, with particular emphasis placed on the skills necessary for effective oral and written communication in the target language at an advanced level
- Build on knowledge of the sociocultural aspects of the regions/countries in which the languages are spoken and to continue to develop transferable skills necessary for studying and/or working abroad

Syllabus plan
The module provides a systematic approach to acquiring essential grammar structures in a communicative context and in accordance with the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Whilst the content may vary from year to year, it is envisioned that it will cover some or all of the following topics:

Re-assessment notes
Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.
Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.
You will only be required to retake any failed assessments. Marks for any passed assessments will be carried forward. If you have failed any assessments but managed to pass the module overall, you will not be allowed to retake the failed assessments.
