Module description
After following the English programme in your first year, you will spend the second year in North America, and rejoin the Exeter English degree as a third year on your return.
The Department currently has agreements with the universities of Alberta, Carleton, Toronto and Victoria (in Canada) and Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Kansas, Vassar, and William and Mary (in the USA).
While in North America, you'll follow a balanced programme of study which is broadly comparable with the Exeter second year, but will also be encouraged to take advantage of the wide range of courses and particular specialisms available at their host universities.
Successful completion of North American studies counts towards one-third of your final degree: this is the same as if you were completing the full three years at the University of Exeter.

| Assessments will vary according to the programme of study and the Host University, but these will be made clear to the student once the programme of study and University have been chosen. They will be in a similar format to assessments at Exeter University such as written essays, presentations and practical work. Any assessment will be geared towards assessing the learning outcomes for each module. These will be made available to the student once the programme of study and University have been chosen. A transcript of marks will be provided by the Host University (following the guidelines of the European Credit Transfer Scheme, or ECTS, where appropriate). All of these marks will be translated into Exeter equivalents and will contribute 100% towards module assessment. | 100 |
Re-assessment notes
Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.
Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.
